Letter Treasure Hunt!

Tear some paper into small pieces and write one letter on each piece. Hide the pieces of paper around the house, and ask your child to find and identify the letters.

On a piece of paper, draw two circles, two triangles, two squares, two rectangles, two ovals and two diamonds at random places all over the paper. Ask your child to color all of each shape a different color (the circles blue, the triangles red, etc.)

Go for a walk or look out a window with your child and look for birds.

Discuss where birds live, how they hatch out of eggs, what their bodies are covered with (feathers) and how they move around.

Find a picture of your child from a special event that happened in the past. (ex., their 1st birthday.) Ask your child to look at the picture & then look in the mirror and describe how they have changed since then.

Follow the Leader dance moves:

While listening to music with your child, take turns making up a dance move for each other to copy.

Discuss the word "respectful" with your child. Together, answer these questions: What does it mean to be respectful? What are some examples of respectful words? How do people feel when they are treated with respect, and when they are not?

Tuesday

Look around your home with your child to find objects that begin with the letter Mm.

Have your child use crayons, pens or pencils to measure the width, height or depth different household objects, like books, doors, chairs, tables, etc. Ex, How many pens wide is the front door?

With your child, on a dark clear night, go outside on a blanket to look at the night sky. Talk about the objects in the night sky (moon, stars, planets) and draw a picture of the night sky.

Talk with your child about what happens when there is a rain storm. How does it affect our lives? Can we go outside in the rain? How can we stay dry? How can we stay safe during a storm?

Go for an interval walk/run outside. With your child, run for one minute then walk for one minute, then repeat, around your neighborhood.

With your child, draw a picture together, taking turns finishing each other's drawings. (Ex., one person draws half an object and the other person finishes it.)

Wednesday

Read a story with your child. Fold a piece of paper in three sections and ask your child to draw what happens in the beginning, middle and end of the story.

Fold a piece of paper into four sections. Write the numerals 1-4 (one in each section) on the front and 5-8 on the back. Ask your child to draw that number of things in each box. (ex., one square in the #1 box, two hearts in the #2 box, etc.)

With your child, go outside during the day and look at the daytime sky. Talk about the objects you can see (sun, clouds, rainbow?) and draw a picture of the daytime sky.

Play a restaurant game with your child. Write up a menu and assign each item a price. Ask your child to pretend to order a meal, and help them figure out how much it will cost.

With your child, practice moving in different ways between two points in your home or outside. (Galloping, skipping, running, walking, crawling, tip-toeing, crab-walking, etc.)

Together with your child, brainstorm a list of polite words. Post the list in a prominent place and try to use the polite words as much as possible. Ask your child how it makes them feel when people use polite words vs. impolite words.

Thursday

Using a newspaper or a piece of junk mail, ask your child to circle all the letter Nn's that they can find.

Gather a handful of pebbles, blades of grass or leaves from outside. Ask your child to line up the objects you found, count them, and write down the total number.

At meal time with your child, discuss the fruit &/or vegetable on your plate. Where did it come from? Did it grow on trees or bushes or in the ground? Does/did it have seeds? Can you eat it raw or does it need to be cooked?

Help your child draw a map of our classroom this year. Ask them to tell you where the centers were, and label the ones they can remember. Draw the tables and label where their seat was. Draw the group meeting carpet. Draw the sand table and the cubbies

With your child, count to 20 while you:

touch your toes, pat your head, clap your hands, run in place, jump up high, twist at the waist, do head rolls.

Wish three of your friends well today. Practice belly breathing using the techniques we learned at school. (STAR, Balloon, Drain and Pretzel.)

Friday

Directional Name day!

Help your child write their name in all four directions - frontwards, backwards, down and up.

During bath time, make up a pretend recipe. Let your child use cups &/or measuring spoons to transfer water into a bowl as you read them the recipe. (Ex., "add 6 tablespoons. Then add 4 cups.) Have them count out loud as they transfer the water into the bowl as directed.

Ask your child to remember the daily classroom routine we followed at school. Write down what they can remember. Then, write down the steps in your daily routine at home. Discuss how the two routines are the same and different, and why.

Play "Simon Says" with your child using positional words including on, under, over, behind, near, far, above, below, toward and away. (ex., Simon says 'Step on the rug." Simon says "crawl under the table.")
